The increasing global competition, challenges companies with the general requirement to continually produce innovative products at the lowest possible cost. These requirements driven by the end user or the competition, demand for innovation throughout the value chain. Complex product geometries, the use of difficult-to-process materials as well as high requirements on precision and wear behaviour are just a few challenges that the manufacturing technology has to face. The focus is not only primarily forming manufacturing processes such as turning, milling and cutting, but equally worth preserving upstream, midstream and downstream processes such as deburring and cleaning.

Recent studies of the Fraunhofer IPK Germany show, that in the production an average of five to eight post-processing methods are used, directly or indirectly, and that, for example, the cleaning of a single component accounts for up to 25 % of the costs. Since products can not meet their intended function or only short-term due to burrs and contaminants, deburring and cleaning processes must undergo a greater attention in the value chain, either individually or in combination.

Practical knowledge and applicable know-how is transferred to professionals in the areas of manufacturing, quality assurance, process engineering, construction and development of manufacturers and suppliers of all important industries by the expert conference concerning the production steps deburring and cleaning. Knowledge transfer: Industrial Parts and Surface Cleaning in Medical Engineering

To produce medical devices basically the same manufacturing technologies such as turning, milling, stamping, casting or generative processes are used like in other industries.

Although this does not necessarily lead to the same requirements on the cleaning result, but at least the same objective - removing film and particle contamination. These include coolants, cutting and staming oils, preservatives, chips, abrasion and other process materials, which have to be reliably removed for the next processing step, which is often sterilization. However, the materials used are the enhancing factors for the complexity of medical technology, such as shape memory polymers and metals as well as absorbable and biocompatible materials, which require adaptation of the various cleaning methods of wet chemistry to plasma cleaning.

For medical engineering far more important than in most other industries are the verification of the cleaning result and the validation of processes, i.e. the proof that the results safely and sustainably comply with the previously identified requirements.
